This blog is called Harmonic Aftershock because it centers on the harmony that is being created by media convergence. In the most literal sense of “media convergence”, three major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) have converged to fight cancer. On Friday, September 5th, the three networks will simulcast a 1-hour primetime show, “Stand Up to Fight Cancer” in order to raise awareness and money for cancer research.
www.standup2cancer.org serves as the anchor point for the hype leading up to the show, the intake of donations, and ongoing awareness after the show. I want to applaud the architects of this campaign for leveraging community and collaboration (social media) as a means to spread the message.
The Constellation is a dramatic feature that allows anyone to create, add to, or browse “stars” in someone’s honor. It’s a powerful way to visually show a representation of the cancer community. The application’s sharing capability leverages one’s social network to add money to a given star.
SU2C also leverages Facebook Apps through The Stand as well as the concept of micro-communities where donating teams can be organized and joined making the process of donating a bit more personal by bringing ones peer-network closer together.
